Woman Gets 18 Months for Hiding Md. Girl's Body

BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore woman has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for helping her son and another boy cover up the accidental fatal shooting of a teenage girl.

Veronica Alford was sentenced Thursday to five years with all but 18 months suspended for being an accessory after the death of Monae Turnage. The 13-year-old girl was shot when a 13-year-old boy fired a rifle as he played with it. She pleaded guilty in April to helping to hide Turnage's body and the gun.

One boy told investigators he helped move Turnage from a rowhouse and into an alley, where her body was found under some trash bags. Investigators say they found Alford's DNA on Turnage's clothing.

Alford's son, who was 12 at the time, is in juvenile detention.
