One Killed, One Injured in Crash Near Milford

Posted: Updated:

MILFORD, Del.- A Sunday afternoon crash near Milford left a woman dead and a man injured.

Delaware State Police said the crash happened at 3:24 p.m., as 39-year-old Melissa M. Perez, of Wyoming, Del., drove a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee eastbound on Cedar Beach Road, west of Lighthouse Road. According to police, the vehicle failed to negotiate a left curve and exited the south edge of the roadway.

Police said the vehicle then traveled more than 600 feet through a soybean field before returning to the roadway, leaving the south edge of the roadway again, and striking a utility pole. The impact caused the vehicle to rotate counterclockwise while overturning onto its passenger side.

According to police, Melissa Perez was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in the vehicle, James Perez, 30, of Dover, was transported by ambulance to Milford Memorial Hospital, for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police said neither the driver nor the passenger were properly restrained at the time of the crash.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours as troopers investigated and cleared the crash. The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation.
