Va. Medicaid Commission Meets for First Time

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The state panel that verifies a series of daunting reforms to Medicaid as a condition for expanding access to the federal-state health care program has met for its first time.

The Medicaid Innovation and Reform Commission got its first glimpse Monday of what's driving health cost increases that have dwarfed consumer products inflation and national defense spending.

The commission with five senators, five delegates and two gubernatorial cabinet members was created by a compromise during the final stages of the 2013 state budget talks that allows for the possibility of Medicaid expanding to an additional 400,000 low-income Virginians just above the federal poverty level.

Earlier, conservatives opposed to expanding Medicaid plan rallied against it the Bell Tower on the Capitol lawn.
