NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women's soccer squad announced an ambitious 2013 schedule Monday afternoon with the Blue Hens ready to take on five teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
Head coach Scott Grzenda, who will
begin his 24th season at the helm of the Blue Hens this fall, welcomes
back a talented squad led by All-Colonial Athletic Association standouts
Chelsea Duffy and Allegra Gray. Delaware
went 9-8-1 a year ago and advanced to the first round of the
This year's slate will include 10
non-league opponents and eight CAA foes, including league newcomer
College of Charleston. After pre-season exhibition games vs. 2013 NCAA
qualifier La Salle (Aug. 13) on the road and George
Washington at home (Aug. 16), the Blue Hens will open the official campaign Aug. 23 at Big East entry St. John's.
Delaware's 2013 slate will include
five teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago, including
Georgetown, which advanced to the second round of the national
tournament before falling to Baylor, Metro Atlantic
Athletic Conference champion Loyola (Md.), Northeast Conference
Tournament champion Long Island, Colonial Athletic Association
Tournament champion Hofstra, and perennial Big East contender Rutgers.
In addition, the 2013 slate
includes NEC regular season champion St. Francis (Pa.), NEC runner-up
Monmouth, CAA regular season champion William & Mary, CAA Tournament
runner-up UNCW, and CAA semifinalist Drexel.
The Blue Hens will open the 2013 UD athletics season with road games at St. John's Aug. 23, at Monmouth on Aug. 25, and at Rutgers on Aug. 30 before hosting Loyola for the home opener Sept. 6 at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
Other non-leagues games will take
place on Sept. 8 at Georgetown, Sept. 13 at home vs. St. Francis, Sept.
15 at home vs. Seton Hall, Sept. 20 at home vs. Long Island, Sept. 22 at
Temple, and Sept. 29 at former CAA foe George
The CAA opener is set for Sept. 26 at Towson followed by league games at home vs. James Madison (Oct. 3), at William & Mary (Oct. 6), home vs. Hofstra (Oct. 11), home vs. Northeastern (Oct. 13), home vs. Drexel (Oct. 18),
at Charleston (Oct. 25), and at UNCW (Oct. 27). The six-team CAA Tournament will begin Nov. 3 at home sites with the championship round set for Nov. 8-10 at the highest remaining seed.
The 2013 NCAA Tournament will begin Nov. 15 with the semifinals and finals set for Dec. 6-8 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
