SALISBURY, Md.- The Delmarva Shorebirds (4-2) recorded four hits in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Lakewood BlueClaws (2-4) 7-6 in walk off fashion on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The Shorebirds plated three runs in the first inning against Lakewood starter Kevin Walter. With two outs and two men on, both courtesy of walks, Torsten Boss doubled to right field to score Tucker Nathans. Then, Roderick Bernadina hit a two-run single through the left side of the infield to put the Shorebirds up 3-0.
In the second inning, Gregory Lorenzo led off with a towering home run to left field, his second of the year, to stretch the lead to 4-0. With one out Lucas Herbst walked. He advanced to third on a groundout to second and scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 5-0.
Lakewood battled back in the fourth with three run scoring doubles to cut the deficit to 5-4. Alejandro Villalobos, who was the hero last night with an RBI double in the ninth inning, hit a two-run double to left field. Chace Numata and Brian Pointer also had RBI doubles.
In the fifth inning, Lakewood tied the game on a home run by William Carmona to dead center field.
The Shorebirds regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Boss connected on a one out double. Two batters later, Marin hit a two out single to center field to put the Shorebirds in front 6-5.
The see-saw battle continued in the sixth inning as Brian Pointer tripled. Then, Mitch Walding singled to knot the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Boss reached with a one out on a fielder's choice. Singles by Bernadina and Lorenzo loaded the bases. With two outs, Weems hit a grounder up the middle that Gustavo Gonzalez fielded, but had no play, as Boss came into score the winning run.
Matt Hobgood earned his staff high sixth win over the final four innings of relief. He allowed three hits and one run.
Shorebirds starter Juan Guzman earned a no decision over five innings. He allowed nine hits and five runs.
The Shorebirds and BlueClaws play the series finale on Wednesday, June 26, at 10:35 a.m.
