OCEAN CITY, Md.- The bodies of the two victims in Sunday afternoon's Ocean City plane crash have been recovered from the wreckage and positively identified as that of two off-duty police officers, authorities said.

Maryland State Police identified the victims as Thomas J. Geoghegan Jr., 43, of Ocean City, Md., and Joshua D. Adickes, 27, of Berlin, Md.  Both men served as police officers with the Ocean City Police Department, according to MSP spokesman Greg Shipley. The bodies of both victims will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for autopsies.

Divers from MSP and Maryland Natural Resources Police worked throughout the morning and early afternoon to recover the bodies from the wreckage of the plane, Shipley said. He added that the plane was about 30 feet below the ocean surface about one-quarter mile off the beach from 130th Street.  Divers had to work in zero visibility and rough waters. They suspended operations about 1:15 p.m. Monday due to dangerous conditions caused by an approaching storm front, Shipley said.

The Nanchang CJ-6A aircraft was owned by Geoghegan, Shipley said. According to Shipley, state police investigators believe he was piloting the plane and Adickes was seated behind him in the only other passenger seat on the aircraft.

Preliminary information indicates the plane took off from the Ocean City Airport between 3:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Shipley said.  The destination is not known at this time.

National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration officials will be investigating the cause of the crash, according to Shipley.

NTSB investigators will be searching the wrecked plane for any type of audio or video recording devices on the plane.  According to investigators, the category the plane was registered in does not require a flight data recorder onboard, but there is a hope that the plane may have been equipped with one anyway.

NTSB says there could be a preliminary report available in a week to ten days, but the full investigation into the cause could take a year to complete.
