DEWEY BEACH, Del. (WBOC/AP)- Delaware State Police say a Rehoboth Beach man was killed and his wife was critically injured when they were hit by an SUV after the Dewey Beach fireworks show Thursday night.

Police said that at around 9:35 p.m., 25-year-old Matthew T. O'Connor of Washington, D.C., was operating a 2005 Lincoln Aviator southbound on Coastal Highway (SR1) and was preparing to turn into a turn lane south of Anchor Way. Troopers said that meantime, Roy and Helen Love were crossing from the raised concrete median to the west side of SR1 southbound when they both stepped out into the left lane and were struck by the Lincoln.

Both were taken to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, where police said 79-year-old Roy E. Love was pronounced dead. Police said his wife, 75-year-old Helene L. Love, was flown to Christiana Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.

Police said the driver of the SUV, 25-year-old Matthew O'Connor of Washington, D.C., was not injured and has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Police said more charges may be filed after the investigation is complete.
