SALISBURY, Md.– The Hagerstown Suns (10-5) scored the first five runs of the game and defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds (7-8) 5-1 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday night in front of 7,996 fans, the largest crowd of the season.
The Suns got on the board in the first inning. Narciso Mesa drew a lead off walk and moved to second on a single by Tony Renda. Mesa later scored on an infield single just beyond the mound by Estarlin Martinez. Will Piwnica-Worms hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Martinez.
In the fourth inning, Pedro Severino hit his first home run of the season to left field to stretch the lead to 3-0.
In the fifth inning, Renda singled and Khayyan Norfork walked to put runners at first and second. Shorebirds starter Josh Hader was replaced by Mark Blackmar. In an attempt to pickoff the runner at second, Blackmar threw wide and into center field. The ball rolled past Gregory Lorenzo and both runners came into score to increase the lead to 5-0.
Hader lasted 4.1 innings and yielded four hits and three earned runs.
The Shorebirds scored their lone run in the fifth inning. Joel Hutter reached on a one out walk. Two batters later, Gregory Lorenzo hit a single through the right side of the infield to advance Hutter to third. He scored on a wild pitch.
In his first relief outing of the season, Blackmar went 3.2 innings and did not allow a run on just two hits. He struck out four batters and did not issue a walk.
Casey Upperman tossed a scoreless ninth inning for Delmarva.
The Shorebirds managed just three total hits on the night.
Reliever Christian Meza eanred the win over three innings out of the bullpen. He allowed two hits and one run. Reliever Gilberto Mendez retired all six batters he faced to end the game.
The Shorebirds and Suns play game two of the series on Friday, July 5 at Perdue Stadium. RHP Juan Guzman is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
