Gun Shop Coming to West Rehoboth

Posted: Updated:

WEST REHOBOTH, Del.- A gun shop is coming to West Rehoboth. And when it comes to the community's problems with crime, some neighbors say it will just add fuel to the fire.

Delaware Firearms LLC is close to opening its doors on Hebron Road in West Rehoboth. Sussex County officials say the land use has been permitted in the commercial zone.

Over the years, West Rehoboth has accumulated a well-known reputation for drugs, violence and gang-related activity. Gmesha Freeman, who lives in West Rehoboth, said all the talk is true.

"It's all the fights," said Freeman. "It's these gangs and stuff, the Bloods and Crips."

In West Rehoboth and outside of town, opposition to the gun shop is widespread. Dave Knobelspiesse has lived in Rehoboth Beach for 60 years and believes the business will bring nothing but trouble.

"It's a bad idea," said Knobelspiesse. "This has been a bad area going back a long time."

Freeman understands how the shop might spur more violence, but also believes it provides an opportunity for people in her neighborhood to protect themselves.

"Some of the elder people, they need guns," said Freeman. "Not the young people."

This reporter placed phone calls to the owner of Delaware Firearms LLC, but they were not returned. There is no word of an opening date for the store.
