DENTON, Md.- A toddler who was found unresponsive at the bottom of an above ground pool in the backyard of a Denton home Monday evening died from accidental drowning, an autopsy has determined.

The autopsy conducted on 31-month-old Xavier Anthony Dawson, of Denton, also revealed no signs of physical trauma, the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Tuesday.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Monday, officers from the Denton Police Department were dispatched a home on the 300 block of South Third Street, in response to a 911 call reporting a drowning. Responding officers say they found Xavier in the front yard of the home receiving CPR from a family friend. Denton officers then assumed resuscitation efforts until EMS arrived on the scene.

The child was transported by ambulance to the Memorial Hospital of Easton where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation remains active and open by the Denton Police Department with the assistance of the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division. Police said that upon completion, the investigation will be forwarded to the Caroline County State's Attorney's Office for final review.
