Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP/WBOC)- The Delaware Department of Correction has announced the appointment of Perry Phelps Chief of the Bureau of Prisons.

Commissioner Robert M. Coupe announced the appointment Monday, when it became effective. Phelps was formerly warden of the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna.

Phelps began his career in 1988 as a correctional officer at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington. He worked his way up to deputy warden.

Phelps succeeds Mike DeLoy, who retired.

"Chief Phelps' diverse experience during his career has prepared him well for this opportunity to lead the Bureau of Prisons," Coupe stated. "I am honored to serve with Chief Phelps as we continue to move the Department of Correction forward."
