United Way of Delaware CEO Defends Compensation

DOVER, Del. (AP)- The CEO of United Way of Delaware is defending raises and bonuses she has received in recent years even as contributions to the agency have remained flat and funding to many local nonprofits was recently cut.

Michelle Taylor said Monday that she believes she is fairly compensated.

According to tax filings, Taylor's compensation grew from about $190,000 in 2009 to more than $257,000 for the tax year ending last June, including a $30,000 retention bonus. She received another raise and bonus this past year.

Local nonprofits that receive United Way funding saw an average cut of about 13% this year.

Taylor acknowledged that funding to many individual nonprofits has been cut but said spending on longer-term strategic efforts to help local communities has increased about 25%.
