Renter's Fee in Federalsburg Rising

FEDERALSBURG, Md.- Starting next year, people renting homes in Federalsburg will need to pay more in rental license fees.

Mayor Bill Beall said that the fee has been in the works for several months, and is aimed at making home inspections more thorough.

The rate is currently $25 a year, and on Jan. 1, will increase to $150 a year.  The fee is being applied to landlords, but many are passing it down to their renters in monthly installments of $12.50.

Robert Newton, who has been renting in Federalsburg for three years, said the increase is too much, and is not the only fee that has risen recently.

"The dump, which was $25, suddenly rose to $100.  That's not fair on people", he said.

However, Beall insists that this fee is not meant to punish anyone.

"Federalsburg is one of the greatest places on the Eastern Shore to live," he said. "We just want to make sure quality of life is equal for everybody as far as safety goes."

Next Monday at 6 p.m., the town council will host a meeting to discuss how to best implement the fee increase.
