GEORGETOWN, Del.- La Red Health Center in Sussex County is receiving a more than $90,000 grant to help get its patients signed up for the Delaware Health Insurance Exchange that opens this fall.

In 2012, La Red served more than 6,500 patients and about 25 percent of them did not have insurance.

"They're trying to juggle a lot of different things. Many patients who should have their annual mammograms, who should be getting colonoscopies, or just regular blood work can't afford that because they don't have insurance," said physician's assistant Nancy Beers.

But come October they will be able to buy insurance on the state exchange.

"Enrollment into the health care exchange is probably going to be a daunting process for many individuals who have gone without insurance for a number of months or years perhaps," said Brian Olson of La Red.

That's where La Red is stepping in, the federal grant will enable them to help people go through the process.

"We see probably, for myself, 50 to 70 percent of the patients I see have under-insurance. They don't have enough insurance or resources to get the healthcare that they need," Beers said.

And living without insurance is often overwhelming for patients.

"The stress of not having resources to, 'You know I have a cough and I need a chest X-ray, I can't get that chest X-ray because I don't have health insurance' or 'I need my mammogram and they found something on my mammogram and I can't see a surgeon because I don't have insurance,'" Beers said.
