David Craig Announces Running Mate

Posted:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Harford County Executive David Craig has chosen Del. Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio to be his running mate in his bid to win the GOP's nomination for Maryland governor, his campaign spokesman confirmed Thursday.

Two news conferences have been scheduled for Tuesday to announce her selection, spokesman Jim Pettit said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. One will be in the morning in Annapolis. The other will be in the afternoon in St. Michaels on the Eastern Shore.

Haddaway-Riccio, 36, has been a member of the House of Delegates since August 2003. Her legislative district includes Talbot County, as well as parts of Caroline, Dorchester and Wicomico counties on the Eastern Shore. She has served on the House Economic Matters Committee.

A native of Easton, Haddaway-Riccio is the owner of Dragonfly Designs, a graphic and web-design company on the Eastern Shore. She was elected to be the House minority whip in December 2010, and she served in that capacity from 2011 until this year, when House Republicans elected new leadership in April.

Craig is the first Republican candidate in the race to name a running mate. The primary is scheduled for June 2014. Del. Ron George, R-Anne Arundel, has announced he is in the race. Michael Steele, the former Republican National Committee chairman and former lieutenant governor of Maryland, has said he is thinking about running.

Democratic Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown was the first candidate in the contest to announce a running mate: Howard County Executive Ken Ulman. Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler is expected to officially announce his candidacy in September. Montgomery County Del. Heather Mizeur also is planning to run. Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger is considering a bid as well.
