Heavy Rains Bring Flooding, Hinder Motorists

DOVER, Del.- Heavy rains and flooding are making for treacherous driving in some parts of Delmarva, particularly in central and lower Delaware as well as Maryland's Midshore.

The Delaware Department of Transportation says that as more than four inches of rain have fallen on portions the state since Friday morning, many roads are becoming covered in water, and some traffic signals are not working, due to power outages. DelDOT is also asking motorists to avoid driving on roads in Kent and Sussex counties if possible until the rainstorm subsides.

Below is a list of roads experiencing flooding, high water or trees down. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when traveling through those areas, including in the evening as there may still some roads covered in water.

  • US 13 SB near White Oak – Down to one lane – Flooding
  • RT 8 EB by Dover High School – Flooded
  • N. Little Creek Rd IFO Post Office – Flooded
  • Division St @ RT 8 – Flooded
  • S. Little Creek Rd between Horse pond Rd & RT 9 – High Water on Roadway
  • Horsepond Rd between Lafferty & Starlifter Lane
  • RT 8 @ Cranberry Run - Water on Roadway
  • Zion Church @ Deer Run Rd. – Water on Roadway / Flooded
  • Artis Dr. @ RT8- flooding across roadway

  • Woodland Ave @ Briar Ct – Closed due to flooding and accident
  • Holly Lake Rd between Phillip Branch @ RT 24 – Closed due to flooding; 1 foot of water on Roadway

In Maryland, the rain kept transportation officials from setting two-way traffic on the westbound span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to ease Friday afternoon beach traffic congestion and highway officials warned of an eight mile delay approaching the bridge. In Ocean City, police officers helped people whose cars had stalled in standing water.
