Heavy Rain Storm Washes Local Profits Away

OAK ORCHARD, Del.- Friday's storm soaked everything in its path, dropping five to eight inches of rain across the Eastern Shore.

Serendipity Restaurant employee Peter Steeple, of Oak Orchard, has been draining water since two o'clock Saturday morning.

"We got five pumps pumping it all out," said Steeple, as he swept water from the sidewalk with a broom.

Flood waters swept through the Oak Orchard neighborhood, leaving some neighbors trapped inside their homes. Roads were closed, so getting around was tough.

Some neighbors told WBOC there was no water damage, but Steeple says the damage was done to his wallet.

"Yesterday we lost $5,000, and our six servers made no money and that's upsetting to us," said Steeple.

And it looks like they will lose more money, customers were turned away.

"They said they are going to get rid of all of the water in about an hour for lunch," said Kathy Strawaka, of Pennsylvania.

Strawaka said she didn't travel a long way for an empty stomach. So, she and her grandson Joey went back to Serendipity when the water receded.

Rain or shine, Steeple said this restaurant can't afford to close its doors another night.

"No matter what, I will suck every drop of this water up before the day is over, trust me," said Steele.
