Shorebirds Edged 5-4 in Game Three


LEXINGTON, Ky.– The Delmarva Shorebirds (9-15) did not record a hit over the final five innings and dropped game three, 5-4, to the Lexington Legends (13-9) on Sunday afternoon at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

The Legends jumped to an early lead in the second inning.  Cam Gallagher drew a lead off walk and later scored on a two out single by Yowill Espinal.

The Shorebirds answered with a two out rally of their own in the top of the third.  Anthony Caronia reached on two out infield single.  He reached third on two passed balls.  After a walk to George Barber, Lucas Herbst singled into center to tie the game at 1-1.  The next batter, Creede Simpson, drilled a three-run homer to left field to put the Shorebirds in front 4-1.

Shorebirds starter Bennett Parry lasted four innings.  He allowed three hits and one run with seven strikeouts.

In the fifth inning, the Legends scored four runs against relief pitcher Mark Blackmar to grab a 5-4 lead. Terrance Gore was hit by a pitch to open the inning and scored on a deep double to right-center by Mark Threlkeld.  Bubba Starling followed with a single to score Threlkeld to trim the deficit to 4-3.  Then, Michael Antonio hit a broken bat double down the left field line to tie the game.  Fred Ford lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Legends a 5-4 lead.

Blackmar went three innings and allowed five hits and four runs.  In his final inning, the seventh, Blackmar retired the side in order.

Casey Upperman pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Shorebirds.

The Shorebirds did not record a hit over the final five innings at the plate.  The Legends outhit the Shorebirds eight to four.

The Shorebirds and Legends play the series finale on Monday, July 15, at 7:05 p.m.
