SALISBURY, Md.– The Delmarva Shorebirds, class "A" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, are excited to announce that Shorebirds left-handed pitcher, Matt Taylor, has been named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 8 through July 14.
The 22-year-old spun an eight-inning gem on July 12 against the Lexington Legends (Royals) at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. In a career high eight innings, Taylor allowed just one hit and no runs. The Legends only hit came in the first inning. Taylor retired 17 batters in a row between the end of the first and beginning of the seventh inning.
The Midland, Georgia native lowered his ERA to 3.06 after the outing, which ranks tied for 11th in the South Atlantic League.
Taylor has not allowed an earned run in his last 14 innings, dating back to the final inning of his start on July 1 against Lakewood. During three starts in the month of July, he is 1-1 with a 0.90 ERA. In 20 innings pitched, he has yielded just ten hits and two earned runs.
The Orioles fifth round selection in the 2011 draft ranks second in the Orioles farm system in ERA (3.06) and fourth in opponents batting average (.232).
Taylor becomes the first Shorebirds player to receive a weekly South Atlantic League honor in 2013.
