NEWARK, Del. (AP/WBOC)- Delmarva Power is calling its first energy savings day of the year, offering customers savings for cutting energy use during peak demand hours.

The utility says an increased demand for electricity throughout the region is expected Wednesday. The efforts are meant to help Delmarva avoid having to purchase costly power during the days of highest demand.

Under the new peak savings program, customers who reduce their energy use below their baseline on Wednesday between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. can get $1.25 off their bill for every kilowatt hour of reduced usage. For Delaware and Maryland customers who have signed up to participate in the Energy Wise Rewards program, Delmarva Power will cycle air conditioner compressors off and on for short intervals during these hours.
