Md. Probes Baltimore Inner Harbor Fish Kill

Posted:

BALTIMORE (AP)- The Maryland Department of the Environment is investigating a fish kill and an unusual milky green color in the water of Baltimore's Inner Harbor and a tributary.

Department spokesman Jay Apperson says officials responded Thursday to reports of a fish kill near the spot where the Jones Falls empties into the harbor. Apperson says they found an unusual green milky tint to the water and dead fish popping up. State environmental officials estimate about 200 menhaden were killed by a lack of oxygen in the water.

Apperson says the recent heat wave could be a factor, but a likely cause is too many nutrients in the water.

Officials are working with the city to determine if there have been any sewage leaks in the area.
