Long Lines to Enter Mark First Night of Del. State Fair

Posted:

HARRINGTON, Del. (WBOC) - Huge lines to get into the fairgrounds marked the first night of the 94th annual Delaware State Fair.

It was the concert Thursday night that seems to have caused big back ups at the gate. Country star Luke Bryan was featured as the kick-off concert at the fair. Fair staff said it was the kind of show they usually like to have on a weekend night. But scheduling did not allow for that.
The line to get in looped around deep into the nearby parking lot at times.

"Very, very excited to have Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line here. It was a great show," said Danny Aguilar, assistant GM of the fair. "But it was a lot of people coming in at the same time."

Aguilar said the show was a sell out.

"Everyone got off work at 5. The doors opened at 6. Unfortunately, it was the perfect storm."

That left long lines and lots of waiting.

"We were in line long enough to miss the first 20 minutes of the show," Erica Handy posted on the WBOC Facebook page. "It was madness."

"I've been to sold out concerts before and never had to wait so long," wrote Tara Chandonnet. "We waited for 30 minutes. It was a chaotic mess! Hopefully they figure it out!

Aguilar said a new queuing system this year may have contributed to the delays getting in.

"Last year we had folks coming in straight on. Now we're going east-west, like you'd see at Disney World or an amusement park. We changed the shuttle routes. We're making some adjustments to those. We just finished putting up some new barricades, new signage. So, this week coming up people should experience a different traffic flow."

And he is confident getting into the rest of the fair will be a smooth experience.

"I think the system we have in place will be good for the remaining nine days," he said.

Aguilar still recommends coming out a while before the show walk around the fair a bit to avoid a wait at the gate.

Some correctional officers in Delaware are concerned about staffing accommodations for maximum security inmates at the Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna, a prison that experienced an inmate uprising in February in which a correctional officer died.
