Md. School Board Reviews Graduation Speaker Rules

Posted:

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - A Maryland school board says it's reconsidering a policy on high school graduation speakers after one school's valedictorian didn't get an opportunity to speak.

Washington County's policy specifies that the valedictorian and salutatorian get first cracks at delivering graduation speeches.

The policy is being reviewed after the valedictorian at Washington County Technical High School was bypassed as a speaker during that school's audition process.

Principal Jeff Stouffer says his school holds auditions among seniors with the top six grade-point averages.

Valedictorian Bethany Magner wanted to speak, but wasn't selected. Her grandfather then spoke to a school system official and school board member.

The school board says it's reviewing the district's policy. Stouffer says he doesn't plan to change his system unless forced to.
