GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) - Financial troubles are forcing Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary to close.

Director of Operations Cindy Woods says the nonprofit, no-kill shelter in Georgetown will have to close Aug. 30 because operating costs have been higher than estimated. The shelter can no longer afford food or medical care for the animals. The shelter is asking for food and money donations to get through the next five weeks and pay off debts.

Safe Haven is trying to send as many of the 180 dogs and 100 cats at the shelter as possible to permanent homes or other no-kill shelters.

Kent County officials say they expect notice from Safe Haven to terminate the county's dog control contract.
