WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The New Castle County auditor says the county didn't act fast enough to correct problems when some Artesian Water customers were overcharged on their sewer bills.
Auditor Bob Wasserbach estimates that the scope of the errors in bills customers received in January could total $500,000, but the exact total is unknown.
Wasserbach says Accounting and Fiscal Manager Denny Hardman knew about the errors in December and Chief Finance Officer Michael Coupe knew in February and agreed the county should wait for a complaint before examining a bill. Wasserbach says that call should have been made at a higher level. He says the county executive and chief administrative officer should have been alerted immediately, but didn't learn about it until May.
