SELBYVILLE, Del.- Todd Clyde, the owner of Delmarva Pet Resort, says he takes care of 47 dogs each day that aren't his own. The dogs are from Kent County and were caught as a part of Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary's dog control contract.

Safe Haven lost that contract on Tuesday and Clyde said Safe Haven has not paid him for the dogs in three months.

"They've gotten way behind on the bill," Clyde said. "I don't want to go into the particulars, but for the past three months I've been taking care of them and feeding them with my own money."

Clyde said his relationship with Safe Haven was not always this way.

"For years it's been fine, except I think they've gotten a little bit over their heads with the animal control and they've just taken in, more dogs come in that can come out," he said.

So now the burden for caring for the dogs falls on Clyde.

"I'm spending every penny I make on the Safe Haven dogs," he says he needs help. "We can always use food. Food is a basic, we like, we feed them pedigree which is a nice decent dog food for them."

WBOC reached out to Safe Haven but our calls were not returned.

"It's not a blame game but somebody needs to step up. It's an animal control contract somebody has to be responsible for it. These are Kent County dogs," Clyde said.
