Hundreds of Same-Sex Couples Wed in Sussex County in July

Posted:

GEORGETOWN, Del.- Hundreds of same-sex couples flocked to the Sussex County Marriage Bureau in Georgetown to receive their marriage licenses in the first month of legalized gay marriage in Delaware.

According to the Sussex County Clerk of the Peace John Brady, 244 same-sex couples received marriage licenses in July -- 109 through conversions and 135 with new marriages. Those totals eclipse the 127 traditional marriage licenses applied for in Sussex County in July.

Brady says the Sussex County Marriage Bureau performed 133 ceremonies for same-sex couples -- 75 of which were performed by Brady himself. Same-sex couples came from as far as Florida and Ohio to receive their marriage licenses in Sussex County.

The previous high for one month so far in 2013 was February with a total of 78 marriage licenses given out in Sussex County.

Brady adds, July saw a record-setting income for the Sussex County Marriage Bureau at $33,375, which will go to the Sussex County general fund.
