Race Car Stolen From Delmar Home

Posted: Updated:

DELMAR, Del.- On Saturday, there was a brazen theft in Delmar, in which a drag racer was stolen from outside of a man's garage. The car belonged to the Powell family, who have raced these cars for more than 50 years. Now the owner of this car, Bruce Powell said he would give $1,000 to anyone who could find either the stolen car or the trailer that held it.

Powell said that the value of the stolen property was around $40,000. But he also said it is more than just financially important to him. He said that racing is a family tradition for him.

"When I was a kid - when I was just 16 - I just loved drag racing," he said. "And I drag raced around the street a lot. And then I went to the track. And I got caught a lot. I got a mess of tickets."

And now at 65, Powell still loves racing. However, it has now become more a family affair. Both his children and his four grandchildren are avid racers.

The car was stolen late Saturday night. The thieves took the trailer that held the car, and drove off through the neighbors' lawn northbound.

The family has six other race cars, other than the one which was stolen. But Powell said that the lost one was important to him, because he hoped to pass it down to future generations.

"We just keep (the cars) hung up when we don't use them," he said looking at another red racer sitting in his garage. "Just wait for the next generation to want a car - then we bring it out."

Powell looked through photos Tuesday, and said that in the end it is all about his grandchildren receiving their birthright. He said it is part of the family legacy that he retains this racer.

"I believe that when my grandkids have kids - they'll have them in race cars too," he said. "I'm pretty sure."
