Small Aircraft Crashes off Elliott Island in Dorchester County

ELLIOTT ISLAND, Md.- Authorities say a small aircraft crashed into the water off of Elliott Island in Dorchester County early Sunday evening.

The crash occurred at approximately 6 p.m. Maryland State Police said the two people on board the aircraft, Daniel Markinek and his son, were able to walk away without injuries.

"You only have like 5 seconds. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. And there's no control," Markinek said. "The water's coming at you at 60 miles an hour. You don't have time to pray, curse - anything - or say goodbye. Once I popped my head up, I was already gasping. And I looked over to the other side and I saw my son's head pop up. That made my day. I said we made a good landing."

Efforts are under way to tow the aircraft, police said.

The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified of the incident and will investigate.
