Speeders Caught On Camera: Wicomico County To Crack Down

Posted:

SALISBURY, Md.-  The Sheriff's Office in Wicomico County is asking county officials to consider expanding its speed camera program to catch more motorists whom speed in school zones for the upcoming school year, deputies announced Tuesday.

Drivers clocked at more than 12 miles per hour over the limit will be tagged for $40 fines.

(Joseph Taylor) "once they get your tag numbers in other words, then you get a bill in the mail and that's not right. I don't think it's right myself."

DEPUTIES HAVE BEEN STUDYING TRAFFIC FOR THE LAST COUPLE YEARS.
AND FOUND THESE HARD-TO-SPOT CAMERAS TO BE EFFECTIVE.
SO THEY'RE ADDING MORE.

(bonnie Cunningham)- "I don't see anything wrong with it, if it's going to help save lives, then sure that's fine.

LAST YEAR-- THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE COLLECTED OVER $40,000 DOLLARS.
THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAYS IT WAS USED FOR PATROL CAR COMPUTERS, THE K-9 UNIT, AND UNIFORMS.
BUT JOESPH TAYLOR ISN'T BUYING IT.
HE THINKS IT'S A "CASH COW."

(Joesph Taylor)- "I don't think a speed camera should be put up. It's like a slick move in other words."

AND THAT'S NOT THE ONLY CONCERN.

S/U
COMPUTER GLICHES IS THE NUMBER ONE CONCERN WITH A LOT OF DRIVERS I SPOKE TO TODAY.
LAST NOVEMBER, AN ALARMING NUMBER OF VIOLATIONS CAN ROLLING FROM A CAMERA LOCATED NEAR THIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BEHIND ME.
DEPUTIES WERE CONCERNED WITH THE NUMBER OF VIOLATIONS COMING FROM THAT CAMERA IN THIS AREA, SO THEY REFUNDED ALL OF THE CITIATIONS TO THOSE DRIVERS.

BUT THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAYS EVERY MORNING CAMERAS ARE CHECKED.
AND TICKETS ARE CONFIRMED BEFORE DROPPED INTO THE MAIL.
POLICE HOPE MORE SPEED CAMERAS WILL BE A PRICY WAKE-UP CALL FOR SPEEDERS.
