Suspect Arrested in Assault on Del. Trooper

DOVER, Del.- Delaware State Police have announced the arrest of a a man accused of breaking into a Dover business and then allegedly assaulting a trooper investigating the burglary.

Police said Wednesday that   has been located and is currently behind held in the Chester County Detention Center in Pennsylvania. DSP detectives were contacted by the Downington Police Department late Tuesday night after officers there took Putnam into custody. He is currently being held on a fugitive warrant pending extradition to Delaware, where he will be charged with first-degree assault of a police officer, second-degree burglary and related charges.

Police said Putnam was wanted in connection with an incident that occurred shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday, as troopers responded to a burglary alarm that activated at Hertrich Nissan at 1378 South DuPont Highway in Dover. 

Investigators said that as the 26-year-old female trooper entered the parking lot, she observed a Honda Accord attempting to leave the business via the north exit. Police said when the trooper began to exit her vehicle in an attempt to make contact with the driver, the Accord continued to drive directly at her and struck the driver's side door of the trooper's patrol car. This action caused the trooper's left foot to be pinned in between the door and the frame, police said. 

Troopers said the suspect, who was later identified as Putnam, continued driving recklessly in the parking lot striking two more automobiles before fleeing the area.  Registration information was obtained by troopers and Putnam was established as a suspect.
 
Troopers said that after checking the area they discovered Putnam had entered the business through a window and removed a safe, which he placed in the passenger's side of his vehicle.  Police said that as Putnam was fleeing the parking lot, the safe fell out of the passenger's side door and onto the ground.
 
The trooper was transported to Kent General Hospital where she was treated for a fractured left foot.
