Md. Teacher Accused of Sexually Abusing Students

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - Montgomery County Police have charged an elementary school teacher with sexually abusing 14 students in his classroom.

Fifty-four-year-old Lawrence Wesley Joynes of Dundalk was charged in a criminal warrant on Aug. 8. Authorities say he is currently in custody in Baltimore County on child pornography charges.

Joynes has been a Montgomery County public school teacher for 27 years and has taught at New Hampshire Estates Elementary School in Silver Spring for 10 years.

Authorities say an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security and Baltimore County Police in February indicated Joynes possessed child pornography. His home and classroom were searched, and authorities say videos and images of children were found on his computer and digital media.

It could not be immediately determined if Joynes has a lawyer.
