SMYRNA, Del.- The Delaware Department of Corrections says an inmate at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna has died after an illness.

Seventy-one-year-old Charles N. Beebe of Lewes died at the prison early Monday evening.

Beebe was serving a sentence of life plus two years for second-degree unlawful imprisonment, offensive touching and violation of parole on charges of kidnapping and assault with intent to rape. He was sentenced in October 1987.

Officials say his body has been turned over to the State Medical Examiner's Office, as is standard procedure.
