Court Rejects Appeal in Veterans Hospital Slaying

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- A Blackstone man who killed another man in the parking lot of a Richmond veterans' hospital has lost a federal appeal.

Cornelius Hayes was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the February 2012 shooting death of 58-year-old James Lee at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Medical Center.

Hayes waived his right to appeal his sentence and his conviction for using a firearm in a violent crime causing the death of another person. However, his lawyers questioned whether he knowingly and voluntarily waived that right and whether the trial court erred in applying a sentencing enhancement for reckless endangerment during flight.

A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Hayes on both points Wednesday.
