Marydel Man Injured in Wilmington Crash

WILMINGTON, Del.- A Marydel, Delaware man is in critical condition after a serious crash in Wilmington.

Delaware State Police say it happened on I-495 northbound on the Christina River Bridge around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say a preliminary investigation indicates that Steven W. Schwan, 38, of Hartly was traveling I-495 northbound, operating a 2007 Ford F-150, pulling a utility type trailer that contained an unsecured fiberglass pickup truck bed liner.

Police say the unsecured bed liner came out of the utility trailer and onto the road.
Investigators say Schwan stopped and parked the Ford F-150 in the left travel lane of I-495 northbound and got out of the vehicle, along with a passenger identified as Charles J. Tucker, 33, of Marydel, Delaware, in order to retrieve the bed liner.
Police continue that as Tucker was standing on the left shoulder, between the utility trailer and the concrete barrier wall, a 2005 Pontiac Vibe operated by Phillip C. Amaro, 39, of Media, Pennsylvania was traveling I-495 northbound in the left lane and hit the rear of the utility trailer. After the impact, police say the utility trailer rotated and struck Tucker, who was then thrown about 10 feet in the air, landing on the left shoulder of the roadway.
Tucker was transported by Delaware State Police Aviation Helicopter Trooper 4 to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was admitted in critical condition with multiple traumatic injuries.
Steven J. Schwan was not injured.
Phillip C. Amaro was properly restrained and was not injured.
I-495 northbound lanes were closed and I-495 southbound was restricted to one lane of travel for approximately 2.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
Troopers continue to investigate this crash with charges pending the conclusion of the investigation.
