NEAR GEORGETOWN, DelDelaware Electric Cooperative's 20 acre solar energy farm is now completely online, powering hundreds of homes in rural Delaware.  Construction began in January, and part of the facility began producing energy in July.

Delaware Electric Co-op says the Bruce A. Henry Solar Energy Farm has 16,000 solar panels and can produce four megawatts of electricity: enough to power 500 homes in Delaware.

The co-op says in the first year alone, its energy project will prevent more than 12 million pounds of carbon dioxide  from being released into the air.

The project costs $14 million and officials say the facility could expand to 40 acres with the ability to produce electricity for  1,000 homes in the first state.

By 2025, Delaware utilities will be required to buy or produce 25 percent of their energy from renewable sources.
