SHEFFIELD, Mass. – Authorities say a Delaware man died while hiking the Appalachian Trail in western Massachusetts.

Authorities say it happened when the 28-year-old male fell down a 35-foot ravine.

The Sheffield Police Chief said he received the emergency call at 1:45p.m. Wednesday, and was one of the first people to respond the scene. When he got there, the police chief says a group of college students were trying to help the victim.

The victim was hiking with his 22-year-old brother at Race Brook Falls near the Connecticut border. Authorities say the victim died as rescuers rushed him from the scene. The younger brother was not injured.

No names have yet been released.
