SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University football team has been selected to win the Empire 8 Athletic Conference title by the conference coaches, earning its third-straight title as the league announced the results of its preseason coaches' poll on Monday.
The team has won the title in each of its first two season in the league.
Salisbury collected seven first-place votes and 49 points. They were six points ahead of St. John Fisher College, which was picked to finish second, with 43 points and the remaining first-place vote. The distribution of points and first-place votes for Salisbury and St. John Fisher is exactly the same as it was prior to the 2012 season.
Alfred University was picked to finish third with 35 points. The team finished just one game behind Salisbury in 2012. They are followed by Buffalo State University (28 points) and Ithaca College (28), Utica College (20), Frostburg State University (14) and Hartwick College (7).
Salisbury is set to open the 2013 season on Sept. 7 as they host Christopher Newport University at 6 p.m.
The university will open Empire 8 play at Utica on Oct. 5.
