Motorcyclist Criticially Injured in Del. Crash

Posted: Updated:

BETHANY BEACH, Del.- Delaware State Police say a motorcyclist sustained serious injuries following a Saturday morning crash on the Indian River Inlet Bridge.

Police said that at around 2 a.m. Saturday, 27-year-old Robert E. Butler, of Milton, was operating a 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle northbound on Coastal Highway in the right lane cresting the top of the bridge.

Police said that the motorcycle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, then struck the right rear of a 2004 Chevrolet van, driven by 25-year-old Eli M. Stapleford, of Lincoln. The motorcycle then careened to the right striking the concrete barrier before coming to a stop in the roadway, investigators said.

Butler was thrown off of the motorcycle. He was transported to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes and later transferred to Med-Star Washington Hospital Center in Washington, where he is in the intensive care unit.

Stapleford was not injured in the accident and was able to bring his car to a stop, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Editor's note: Late Thursday morning, Delaware State Police issued a press release that stated Butler had died from his injuries. DSP later announced that the information they received from the Office of the Medical Examiner was incorrect. Police now say Butler has not succumbed to his injuries as had been previously reported.
