MIDDLETOWN, Del. (AP)- Gov. Jack Markell is joining Delaware education officials to promote the state's adoption of common core standards.
Markell planned to join Secretary of Education Mark Murphy at Silver Lake Elementary school in Middletown on Tuesday night for a common core back-to-school night for education leaders. State lawmakers, school superintendents, and representatives from school boards and the state teachers union are expected to attend to see how the new standards incorporate higher-level thinking and application.
The Common Core State Standards, adopted by 45 states and the District of Columbia, establish benchmarks for reading and math, replacing education goals that varied widely from state to state.
Although the federal government was not involved in creating the standards, critics say they amount to a national school curriculum, pre-empting the states.
