ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP)- A Maryland delegate is asking the attorney general whether it's legal for state police to allow up to 200 employees from five agencies to view prospective gun buyers' information as the state churns through an application backlog.

Del. Kevin Kelly, an Allegany County Democrat, wrote Attorney General Douglas Gansler seeking details on a 3-day "All Hands on Deck" effort that started Saturday to handle tens of thousands of applications filed ahead of the Firearm Safety Act's Oct. 1 effective date.

Kelly says he finds it "offensive, reprehensible and hopefully illegal" that non-police workers had access to personal information in the applications.

State Police spokesman Greg Shipley says the workers deal with personal data daily and information was on encrypted discs set to be destroyed.
