BALTIMORE (AP)- Gov. Martin O'Malley is encouraging people to volunteer on a national day of service to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

O'Malley attended an event Wednesday that called attention to the Baltimore Community ToolBank, which loans tools and equipment for 3 cents on the dollar to charitable groups and community organizations.

The governor says he thinks the best way to remember the attacks is serving and "being a part of something greater than ourselves." He hopes everyone will remember the anniversary by serving others and make the country stronger.

O'Malley says much has changed since the attacks but much remains to be done. He says Americans are "an open and free people" and that makes us vulnerable to people who want to harm the country.
