RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Virginia has recorded its first confirmed case of West Nile Virus in a horse this year.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said Wednesday that the horse in Russell County had been vaccinated for the disease just two weeks before becoming ill. It's undergoing treatment. Often horses have to be euthanized.
In April, the department sent out an announcement encouraging horse owners to discuss a vaccination schedule for West Nile Virus and Easter Equine Encephalitis with their veterinarians
Earlier this week, the department announced the first confirmed case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Virginia this year. The Prince George County gelding, which had not been vaccinated, was euthanized.
