RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- The Virginia Supreme Court is creating a commission to recommend ways to improve legal services for low-income residents.

The court announced establishment of the Virginia Access to Justice Commission on Friday. The commission will consist of 17 to 20 judges, lawyers and others appointed by Chief Justice Cynthia D. Kinser.

According to the court, the commission will coordinate justice access activities among various groups, encourage lawyers to represent low-income people and promote development of additional resources for underserved populations. The emphasis will be on helping people with civil cases.

The court received a $12,000 grant from the American Bar Association to plan the commission. Twenty-eight other states already have Access to Justice Commissions.
