New Jersey Boardwalk Fire Has Some Worried On Delmarva

Posted:

OCEAN CITY, Md.- Thursday's boardwalk fire in Seaside Park, New Jersey has some people shaken on Delmarva.

Just like Seaside Park, businesses are very close together on Ocean City's boardwalk. Business owners say that closeness helps everyone's business but could also spell disaster if a fire breaks out.

"That's all it takes, just one thing, one unexpected event and it can completely change an entire season, an entire place," said business owner Caitlin Schultz.

Fires can happen anywhere but Baltimore County firefighter Todd Smith says he has faith is one breaks out on Ocean City's boardwalk.

"The fire department in Ocean City has been really on top of it. They must have a contingency plan that, if it starts this is what we're gonna do, this is how we're gonna attack it. If it starts to get out of hand we're gonna stop it at this point so we can save everything else," Smith said.

Not that it would be easy if a fire broke out. "The big problem with that is all of these resort towns that are on the beach, you pick up the winds and it dries out the wood, a lot of places are all older buildings," he said.

The biggest fire the Ocean City boardwalk has seen was in December of 1925, three blocks of old downtown and the pier were destroyed in that fire.
