CRISFIELD, Md.- The former police chief of Crisfield is facing theft and related charges following accusations that he broke into a truck and stole several items.

Crisfield police said that at around 11 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to an auto body shop on Jacksonville Road to investigate the report of a suspicious person. When officers arrived on the scene, they said they stopped the truck of 58-year-old Norman C. Swift 3rd, as it was leaving the scene. Police said that inside Swift's truck was $1,470 worth of items allegedly stolen from a truck parked on the body shop's lot for service.

Police said they also found a .22-caliber handgun and a rifle inside Swift's truck. According to investigators, Swift is prohibited from possessing any firearms because of an active protective order.

Following his arrest, Swift was charged with theft over $500, theft less than $500, destruction of property and two counts of illegal possession of firearms. Bail was set at $25,000.

Swift had served with the Crisfield Police Department for 10 years in the 1980s. He resigned as chief in 1990 amidst theft charges. He was sentenced to a year in jail as part of a plea deal.
