Berlin to Get 'Much-Needed' Sidewalk Repairs

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, Md.- The loud sound of construction workers hammering away at a sideway project near Main Street in Berlin may annoy some people. But for Albert Jarmon of Berlin, the sound of "a much-needed sidewalk repair project" was music to his ears.
The problem is some neighborhoods do not have sidewalks, according to Jarmon.

"Far as walking, it's bad," said Jarmon as he overlooked cars "racing" down Maple Avenue. "The traffic that goes through here and the amount of speed they go through here with the traffic, the sidewalks would make the kids get out of the street. It would be safer."

And if the neighborhoods do have sideways, Anne Franklin, also of Berlin, said many are cracked and have buckled over the years. Some people believe that makes it hard to get around.

"I don't want to fall," said Franklin, who relies on a walker to get around. "I don't walk up the street or anywhere until they have sidewalks."

A walk around town showed several neighborhoods, which are saturated with children, are without sidewalks. Children were walking along the road as if they were walking on a tight rope, which is why town officials are stepping in.

The town is repairing sidewalks, starting with Maple Avenue. Other sidewalks around town will be repaired, costing the town about $48,000.
