MILLSBORO, Del.- Traffic on Route 113 in Sussex County can be the source of many headaches.

"Terrible, this is probably the worst year that I've experienced it on 113. I travel it twice a day to Bethany beach," Bruce Deforest said.

The Delaware Department of Transportation said more than 10,000 vehicles travel the road each day and that number is expected to double by 2030. That is why DelDOT wants to build a bypass around Route 113. Out of the proposed plans, DelDOT is recommending the blue alternative plan.

"The blue alternative starts just north of Millsboro and bypasses Millsboro to the east, it bypasses Dagsboro and ties back in at 113 just south of Frankford and it picks up what we call on-alignment our improvements to 113 through Selbyville," said Monroe Hite, a DelDOT spokesman.

Sharon Adams said something needs to be done but she worries the blue alternative will have environmental and economic consequences.

"If you destroy Indian River Bay the tourists won't come. Who's going to pay, what's going to happen to the economy?" she said.

Hite said the blue plan is the best choice for several reasons.

"There's going to be impact to humans, environment and social, but it balances all of those three, primarily it was the better of the alternatives," Hite said.

But not everyone is sold on it.

"The plan does not deal with congestion; it simply relocates congestion," Carrie Bennett said.

Bennett and others, like Paul Parsons, believe the yellow plan is best for Sussex County. The yellow plan simply adds more lane infrastructure to Rt. 113 from Millsboro to Selbyville.

"It's not being explored as much as it should be," said Parsons.

DelDOT will hold a public workshop on the plan at the Selbyville Fire Hall from 4-8p.m. Thursday.
