Kent County Schools Pushing for Healthier Lifestyles

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.– School districts in Kent County are finding new, creative ways to not only provide students with healthier food options, but also create healthier lifestyles.

Schools nationwide are required to follow a final rule nutrition standard which says what kids need to eat and how much of it depending on the child's age. But some school districts in Kent County are doing more than just following regulations. They are also trying to get kids excited about the changes.

"One of the best things that we can do is if we give the foundation in the schools," said Bridget Amory, principal of Lake Forest Central Elementary School. "It's our intent that this will feed out into our homes and into our greater community as we move forward with positive changes and healthy lifestyles."

In the Milford School District, schools like Mispillion Elementary School have teamed up with local farmers to provide fresher choices.

"We are just so taken back by the products that we can get locally," said Bev Harp, child nutrition supervisor for the Milford School District. "I think it's a great thing to say that we're offering these items in our cafeterias."

Some schools like Lake Forest Central Elementary School in the Lake Forest School District are part of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program that aims to introduce new fruits and vegetables to students.

"Basically what it provides the student several days a week with either fresh vegetable or fresh fruit snack along with some education on that product," said Donald Jumper, child nutrition program supervisor at Lake Forest School District.

Amory said there was some initial hesitation from the students, but many of them have warmed up to the idea of healthy eating.
