PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletic Department on Friday will join the Wicomico County American Cancer Society to participate in its Relay for Life event at Perdue Stadium.
The Hawks are set to enter their fourth year as a proud participant in the event and they take pride in raising donations for a great cause.
Each year, student-athletes and administrators brave the weather and stay overnight at the stadium. Many of the overnight walkers, including the UMES student-athletes, believe that if cancer will not sleep, then neither should the people who have been touched by the effects of cancer.
The Hawks have met or exceeded their goal of being able to donate $1,500 to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life each year. The team's success has been in large part due to the UMES community, fans and parents donating through the UMES Hawks Relay for Life page.
Donations made on behalf of the UMES Hawks go directly to the American Cancer Society and are credited to the student-athletes and administrators who appreciate the support in exceeding its goal. On Sept. 27, the UMES Hawks that are staying the night will walk themed laps and participate in various events throughout the night, all in an effort to show a united expression that they will not let cancer defeat them.
